The Lovely Bones

Movies based off of books can be good, The Lovely Bones is not one of them.  A good movie should be able to stand by itself, people should be able to understand it without reading the book first.  This movie is understandable, but it also has a where-did-this-come-from feeling.

A scene from heaven.

The Lovely Bones was disorienting, disturbing, and shocking.  The main character, Suzie Salmon lives in a neighborhood inhabited by an undocumented serial killer.  The killer lures her in to an underground hut he made just for the occasion, and murders her.

Suzie’s spirit runs away from the murderer, and it takes her a while to learn she is dead.

There are some disturbing scenes in her afterlife, and I had a hard time deciding whether she was in heaven or hell, but it turns out she was in neither.  She was in the spirit world.

There are more scenes from the Suzie’s spirit world that made me feel like I was on drugs, because they were so abstract and full of things that had nothing to do with anything.  I am sure they meant more to people who read the book, but to a viewer without all that background information, the randomness meant nothing.

So unless you feel like watching a movie that makes you depressed, disturbed, and sick to your stomach, I suggest staying away from this one.

Best Picture History

After the Academy Awards last weekend, the hype is up about “The Hurt Locker” taking best picture. The film is very relevant to today’s news.  This film captured the hearts of viewers.

I couldn’t help but wonder what the history of past winners was. The following is a list of Academy Award winners and nominees for the past 10 years.

Friday Night Movie Night March 12, 2010

There are finally a few good movies in the theaters this weekend!  This is a great weekend to get your movie on, maybe even several times.

    Going to the Theater:

If you want to get out and actually spend money in our current economy, here are the top two movies that everyone should enjoy if you haven’t seen them already (click title to see trailer).

First Choice: Alice in Wonderland

Close Second: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Avatar is off the list only because you should have seen it already.  Alice in Wonderland looks almost too trippy, even for Jonny Depp, but oh well, go see it.  I still think that Percy Jackson and the really long title is a great movie, but don’t take my word for it…

    Redbox:

If you’re too lazy and don’t feel like going to the theater, then here are our two suggestions for you to pick up at your local unnamed movie-disposal box that may or may not be the color red.

First Choice: 2012

Close Second: Where the Wild Things Are

Guys go see 2012, everything practically blows up.  Girls get your guy to watch Where the Wild Things Are, even if they say it sucks, they truly will like it.

If you can’t even make it to a local rental place or redbox, but have streaming Netflix at home via computer or xbox, then here are a couple of winners for your night.

First Choice: Dead Snow

Close Second: Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog

Last year I actually got to see Dead Snow at the Sundanc Film Festival in Park City Utah and loved it.  It’s a foreign film imported from Norway and it’s humor is spot on.  Be warned, it’s kinda crude and vulgar, and extremely bloody, so don’t eat before viewing.  Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog is not a kindergarten movie like the title would suggest.  I’ve seen Dr. Horrible’s more than 4 times; it’s that good.

Have a great weekend and don’t do anything really dumb, like my friends who wore Dark Vader helmuts to the Star Trek opening…

Let us know in the comments section if you plan on or did watch any of these films. Also, any ideas for weekend movie/tv activities are welcome as well.
