The Ides of March gives an insightful and intriguing view into the life of a politician and his assistants while running for office. The film delves into the struggle that ensues when a candidate has to survive through the primaries to hopefully make it to voting day, where he will hopefully be elected.

The main character is the press secretary, Ryan Gosling, who has to lie throughout the entire film to be sure that his candidate look good to the press. Exploring the idea of whether or not someone can start a campaign and stick with their values, the Ides of March provides a great insight into our political process.

The combination of the personal an political ambitions of the characters is exemplified throughout the Ohio primary. The movie is based during this crucial primary.

Give this movie a try, you won’t regret it!

What do you get when you combine 6 superheroes, Samuel L. Jackson with an eye patch, a whole mess of explosions, and the culmination of almost 4 years of interrelated movies? It’s either the weirdest party you’ve ever been to, or its The Avengers. Those of you who might be out of the loop, let me get you up to speed: The Avengers is an upcoming movie featuring just about every Marvel superhero that matters, all working on the same team. And even though it’s over half a year away, I’m already giddy.

A new trailer for the movie was recently released, and needless to say I loved it. Here are 7 reasons why you should too:

Loki. Yeah, the evil half brother from the Thor movie. Except this time he’s made it into our world and is ready to act a serious fool. I always loved the villains who conquered with their mind instead of their brawn, and this trailer makes Loki look like some kind of evil Einstein.

Explosions, explosions, explosions. I’m not sure how many explosions are actually featured in the new trailer, but that’s only because I never learned to count that high. I was never good at math anyway. What I do know is that this movie will not be light on the action. Also, I’m pretty sure this isn’t a movie my Grandmother would enjoy.

Hawkeye and Black Widow. Both members of the Avenger team, but neither got their own movie. Black Widow had a big enough part in Iron Man 2, and Hawkeye was shown briefly in Thor. I’m ready to see both of them play a larger role.

Ironman being Ironman. My favorite aspect of Robert Downey Jr’s take on the Ironman character is his narcissism. In a lot of ways Tony Stark(Ironman) is an anti-hero. It would be a shame to see that get lost in a movie as big as The Avengers, so it’s a good thing the trailer showed Ironman has kept to his classic ways.

Captain America vs. Ironman. The trailer hints at these two butting heads, which I think is perfect. Captain America is selfless, humble, and kind. Ironman isn’t. Those two personalities WOULD clash if forced to work together, and I’m sure they will have some great banter in the movie.

“If we can’t protect the earth, you can be damned sure we’ll avenge it”. Maybe the best super hero movie tag line ever. Enough said.

Dr. Bruce Banner / The Hulk. There’s a lot to like about an enormous green rage monster. I will admit that at first seeing a new actor fill this role was a little off-setting. But I’d rather see a new actor than lose the character all together. Besides, it’s the rage monster everyone wants to see. Not the skinny scientist.

The Avengers doesn’t hit theatres until May 2012, but in the meantime check back here to see other entertainment reviews. Check out the ‘About’ page to see what we’re all about!

After a record breaking premier for the demographic, The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 1 premier was a success. With more than 7 million viewers tuning in, the show became one of the highest talked about series premiers on social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook. Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 1 is available for download on iTunes now if you still need to catch up.

As a recap for those of you who haven’t seen the first season, the following is a crash course on the rather successful first season of The Walking Dead. Set on the backdrop of a post apocalyptic Southern United States, the story takes an eclectic group of individuals and pits them to the extremes against the looming undead presence that is overtaking the world.

Sheriff Rick Grimes wakes up in a powered down hospital after a nasty run in with bank robbers that resulted in his extended hospital stay. Disoriented, Grimes finds his way outside of the hospital to surrealist Armageddon. Grimes first encounters with the undead shock and horrify him taking him propelling him toward his family. Upon finding an empty home Grimes comes to his senses and realizes that the family had to have fled the oncoming zombie flood. His mission then becomes clear: to reunite himself with the family and find safety from the US military.

Throughout the rest of the season Grimes is eventually reunited with his family and a ragtag group of refugees. They hide out in the countryside and eventually are overrun by zombies. Several people in the group die, and the group decides to seek safety from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). After reaching what seems to be a safe haven at the CDC, season one ends with the refugees being forced to leave with a rather explosive ending.

Season 2 Episode 1, “What Lies Ahead,” picks up just where the previous season ended seamlessly. Caravanning through the Georgia wasteland, the group reaches obstacles as abandoned cars and an engine malfunction prevent the group from moving forward. Forced to stop, an oncoming “pack” of zombies pin the travelers down in fear and cause one of the children to flee for her life.

The rest of the episode is a rescue effort that dives deeply into character development and understanding several of the underlying relationships and psychological mindsets of the various cast members. From former flames, to existentialist ideals of existence, and ending with a man down cliffhanger, the season opener puts for its best foot to impress and hook the audience.

Tune in every Sunday evening for the newest episode of Walking Dead. Season 2 Episode 2 will premier Oct. 23 9/8 central. Tune in and give your input on the most talked about show today!

Dream House premiered September 30, 2011. If you haven’t seen a trailer and you insist on seeing this movie, stay away from the trailers. They will spoil the movie and add to even more confusion in the movie while you are watching the movie.

The movie begins when the main character played by Daniel Craig quits a job in New York City to move with his wife, played by Rachel Weisz and their two girls. After moving into a quaint New England home, the family finds out that the home was the location of multiple murders. The murderer killed his wife and his daughters.

When Daniel Craig finds out about the murders he begins to investigate. The investigation throws the family into a huge whirlwind of horror. The confusing plot and twisted logic make the movie hard to understand and difficult to follow.

Not a movie that we would recommend anyone to spend money on this weekend.

The profit margins for Netflix dropped 25% this last quarter after the media giant announced that it was bisecting its services, and that it would be charging almost double in order for people to access both. Recently, Netflix also announced that it would be separating its DVD service out to a new company, focusing only on streaming.

Netflix’s price hike and announcement have caused almost a million people to cancel their subscriptions, with many millions more being angry about being denied services that they enjoyed. The decision seems to be a business savvy one by Netflix, as it can allow more emphasis on streaming. However, the backlash has severely damaged their profits this quarter.

When it all comes down to it, the backlash against Netflix is something that anyone who understands the culture of the Internet could see coming.

When it comes to business decisions versus the mindset of the consumer, the consumer will often react in certain ways that companies now need to plan for. The thing that most businesses still can’t grasp is that people, especially those that are able to unite on the Internet, will not always behave rationally or logically. They will do what they think will suit them best, even if it flies in the face of conventional business logic.

The same thing can be seen with piracy and microtransactions and boycotts and memes and everything else that has developed and is now part of the cultural mindset. Taking the time to get to understand the mindset of the Internet generation and knowing how to make smart business decision that make them happy is the best way to go.

Above all else, people do not like feeling like they are being ripped off, especially when prices are incredibly subjective and anyone with an Internet connection can find the material online anyway. If you want people to remain loyal to your service, you need to give them incentive to choose quality above all else.

Hiking prices, bisecting the services, and then separating the services may be a business savvy plan by Netflix. But Netlfix seems to have failed to take into account that by generating bad feelings and making people feel ripped off, they have made enemies. And as any company can attest, making enemies of internet savvy people is not a good idea. One cannot see the ripple effect fully yet. But we can be assured that the 800,000 people that dropped the service will have some bitter people included. Its just part of the trend.

OK! Time for a movie review of Cowboys and Aliens!

Well, it may as well be said up front. This movie is very much one that will either be liked or hated, based on the person. It all depends on what you are expecting out of the movie, really.

Me? I liked it. It is a simple enough premise that borrows form established genres and pays affectionate homages to both. The movie begins with Daniel Craig waking up bloodied in the desert, with his memory gone, a mysterious bracelet firmly attached to his wrist, and a picture of a mysterious woman on the ground next to him.

As Craig wander into a dusty Western town, it is not long before he gets into trouble, drawing the attention of Olivia Wilde as an ethereal woman who knows about his past, and eventually irking Harrison Ford, in the role of a gruff cattle baron with a dark past. As Western drama erupts, aliens suddenly swoop in and begin capturing townspeople; causing Craig, Ford, and Wilde to join forces, form a posse, and begin hunting the aliens to their base in the desert.

The rest of the movie focuses on the chase, with our heroes tracking the aliens through the dusty West and running into bandits and hardship and Native Americans and savage aliens. The movie culminates in a thrilling showdown that is fairly epic and memorable. One thing is for sure. This movie is unique.

This movie is actually strongest when it is focusing on the Western themes. The set pieces and setup fall into familiar genre favorites, but it is still exciting and has great production values. That being said, the sci-fi/ western crossover does not always hold up awesomely well, but it is something new and fun enough that it can be overlooked.

Daniel Craig is great as a gruff grizzled dangerous guy, and Harrison Ford is… well… Harrison Ford. Which was fine with me. Olivia Wilde was fairly good as the mysterious woman who is not as she seems, in that ethereal glising… Olivia Wilde… kinda way.

The movie has been critically blasted, and has sharply divided audience opinion. I’ll say this though: I went into Cowboys and Aliens fully expecting it to suck. And I was pleasantly surprised by what it had to offer. Yeah, its kind of dumb and silly. But at the same time, it is a self aware work, and is therefore something that is presented unashamedly.

Final comments: This is one of the more interesting attempts at genre fusion, and was not presented at all in 3-D. That alone should give you a reason to go see it. For the first time since Avatar, an action movie that was shot and presented in 2-D without any kind of gimmickry. Thank. Goodness.

All in all, your pespective of this movie will all boil down to whether or not your appreciate the silliness of the premise and the straight way that they decided to implement the tone of the film.

Well, it may be a bit outside of the usual realm, but I feel like doing a movie review of Winnie the Pooh today!

It’s been a while since we’ve reviewed a nice family film here, and its something that is well worth doing in order to keep things fresh and fun. And if it’s a nice family film that you want, look no further than Winnie the Pooh.

The movie follows the usual escapades of Pooh and friends, as they have adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood. This time around, out furry friends are spend their time looking for Eeyore’s tail, which has mysteriously gone missing, as well as having contests to replace it while possibly gearing up to face down a monster. Everything is handled with the gentle good humor and silliness that is a part of the franchise, allowing the audience to be thoroughly amused by their hi-jinks.

Silly Pooh and the often hapless Piglet are joined by ferociously harmless Tigger, worrying Rabbit, downtrodden Eeyore, good natured Kanga and Roo, addle brained Owl, and wonder struck Christopher Robin in the search for a good days adventure and fun

Put simply, Winnie the Pooh is DELIGHTFUL. Children will of course take joy in the characters and the silly story, while adults will be able to revel in the stylized gentle simplicity of the artwork and animation. One thing that many people, including myself, were concerned about was the concept of reboots and Winnie the Pooh. However, this movie happily embraces its roots and retains its identity.

Of special note would have to be Craig Ferguson, in the role of Owl. Ferguson has long been a favorite of mine due to his wry wit and gentle smugness, and the effect is infectious in nature. The thing about Craig Ferguson is, once you realize that he is doing a voice in a move, you can’t help but project him onto everything viewed. I don’t know how it really is, but I have to imagine that his voice work sessions are hilarious in nature, and I would happily fork out for some good outtakes.

After being bombarded with a slew of movies celebrating moral relativism and callous indifference toward the world and everything in it, it’s nice to see a film that celebrates innocence and good hearted fun. Too often we get wrapped up in the gritty stuff before we realize what is important, and Winnie the Pooh nicely showcases the kind of heart that many of us forget with time.

Well, here’s a bit of interesting information that is sure to surprise very few people. The Smurfs, the digital rebooting of the beloved Smurfs franchise, is pretty much hated by everyone. That’s right, when I say everyone, I mean everyone.

As in, there are currently no good reviews of this movie that I can find. Everyone that I’ve talked to about it has hated it as well. Now, there are some seriously awful movies that I have seen in my time that have actually made me dumber as a result. Yet, I’ve never though tot award them a zero.

So what is it about The Smurfs that has grated with audiences so? It would appear that while the creators of the film are doubtlessly trying to milk a franchise for a quick buck like they did with Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield, The Smurfs has finally struck the audiences last nerve.

The movie is purported to be idiotic, poorly made, and incredibly grating in nature. Like, while critics give universal praise to Winnie the Pooh, they lambast The Smurfs because one manages to be childlike and one is obnoxiously childish.

These movies try to bank on audience nostalgia while simultaneously pulling in small children, which doesn’t resonate well at all with people. Combine forced nostalgia and poorly made obnoxiousness, and critics react with hostility.

Hopefully with this creative backlash, the people that insist on making beloved cartoons into horrible movies will take the hint and leave the franchises alone. However, if this movie makes back what was invested in it, there will be more, and that’s a promise.

I do have to say one positive thing about this, however. It has to take serious talent to create a movie that is currently at 0% on RottenTomatoes. Like, the fact that this movie is universally hated is kind of impressive in a surreal kind of way.
