Spider-Man Reboot in Play – Villain Announced

Rhys Ifans as The Lizard in Spider-Man reboot

Following months of heavy speculation and uncertainty, the villain in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man has finally been announced. The Lizard has been established as the web-slinger’s foe for the Spider-Man reboot set for release July 3, 2012.

The Lizard will be played by Rhys Ifans. While relatively unknown, other cast members include Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.

Here’s a portion of Marvel’s bio for The Lizard:

Curt Connors was a gifted surgeon who went into a war to help his country. He performed “meatball” surgery on wounded GIs, but his arm was injured in a blast and had to be amputated. He eventually became obsessed with uncovering the secrets of reptilian regeneration, and studied reptilian biology extensively. From his home in the Everglades, he finally determined a serum taken from the DNA of a reptile. He had successfully regrown the missing limb of a rabbit, and, despite the warnings of his wife, chose to test it on himself. Connors ingested it, and his arm did indeed grow back. Unfortunately, it had one side effect: Connors was subsequently transformed into a reptilian monster!

One of the most notable things that separates the Spider-Man series from other comics are the complex relationships Peter Parker has with his enemies. In the case of the Lizard, he was the mild-mannered Dr. Connors for whom Parker worked as a teaching assistant for a time.

The film itself is set to be a complete reboot of the Spider-Man series. That said, Sam Raimi, who directed the previous three films, as well as Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and all of the previous cast members will not be returning.

Speculation regarding the possibility of a second trilogy with Raimi and Maguire spread for some time during which Raimi was presented with three scripts. All of them he turned down. Eventually, he and Maguire walked out thinking they would be unable to make Sony’s May 2011 release date.

The hitherto untitled Spider-Man raises many eyebrows. Some feel it’s too soon to reboot the series and argue that the first three are still too fresh in our minds. They also claim that the only reason the Series worked was because of the passion Raimi had for the character.

Whether or not this reboot will be a success we have yet to discover. Afor the villain choice, we’ll leave that for the fans and skeptics to decide.
