Episode 2 of Glee proved to be an improvement on the pilot. In some ways. There was still cheesy acting and lip-synced performances, but I have to lend it to those kids, they have some talent!
The show’s cast of characters really makes it though. The Cheerios coach, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is probably one of the most power-hungry, negative people on TV but she makes for some great laughs. She has some one-liners that’ll have you squirting protein shake out your nose. Watch Glee Episode 2!
The guidance counselor in Glee, Emma Pillsbury, had more show time this round, and for good reason. Her crush on Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) reaches an unhealthy level in this episode and we see just how in denial and distressed she really is with a quick rendition of Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself.” Truly comic genius.
The music this time around was…interesting. With a school assembly coming up in which Glee is scheduled to perform, Schuester is bent on performing Chic’s “Le Freak!” in an attempt to recruit more Glee club members. Naturally, the existing members are terrified of performing disco in front of their “hormonally imbalanced” peers and take matters into their own hands by surprising the school and Mr. Schuester with a scandalous dance that sends the Celibacy Club scrambling.
Cheerios try out and make the club with some Aretha Franklin and the show ends with a heartbreaking music video akin to a High School Musical scene. I feel like Glee has a lot of potential, and while mostly cheesy, definitely earned some laughs from me. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season goes!
