Summer signals the season finale of some of our beloved TV shows. That means no more Modern Family or Grey’s Anatomy till next Fall. Just as emptiness and depression is about to set in, I am reminded that there is a new season of So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) and a way to stay entertained. It is in its eighth season, but for those of you who for some reason haven’t heard of it before, here’s a little breakdown.
Unlike Dancing With the Stars, where a celebrity (or pseudo celebrity) pairs up with a professional ballroom dancer and dances either a Latin or Standard dance, SYTYCD contestants actually audition in front of 3 judges (Why is it on every reality show, one judge is British?) in a style they’re most comfortable in. This season’s auditions have produced some lesser-known styles like whacking and turfing. After the auditions and a Vegas round where more people are cut, eventually only 20 people make it to the live stage and compete for audience votes and someone wins the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer.”
I think one of the most memorably bizarre contestants so far is the woman who claimed to be the daughter of Ringo Starr. Everyone probably just figured she was delusional and nobody was really expecting her to be a great dancer (which she wasn’t) but the show sent a camera crew into her house to uncover the mystery behind her claims anyway. What they found was an older gentleman with virtually no trace of a British accent who claims to be the original Ringo Starr. (Is there an unoriginal Ringo Starr?) He said he played on four albums and, according to his daughter, went into hiding “after John Lennon was shot three times in the back.”
Apart from the random off-kilter personalities who pepper the show with bouts of irrelevant entertainment, the show is chock full of talented, trained dancers who bring their own personalities and emotions in their dances. I love watching dance because you can see stories unfold through movement. I’ve seen some promising contestants so far and can’t wait to see more! Oh, if you’re into dance shows, also look forward to America’s Best Dance Crew this summer.
